Will You Accept This Resume? How to Survive the Resume Red Roses & Rejections
Your resume just stepped out of the limo, and it has exactly six seconds to make an impression. Is it wearing a tailored suit or a clown costume? Learn how to avoid the "villain edit" of overdesign and make sure the recruiter picks you for the one-on-one interview.

Let’s be honest: your resume is a blind date.
You’ve got about six seconds to make a first impression… before the recruiter moves on.
And if your resume looks cluttered, outdated, or hard to read? You’re out before you even start.
The 6-Second Reality
Recruiters scan for basics: name, title, experience, and dates.
If they can’t find those instantly, your resume fails the test.
Your layout should guide the eye, not confuse it.
Clean Layout = Professional Signal
Think “tailored suit,” not “overdesigned flyer.”
Use white space: It makes your resume easier to read (and less overwhelming).
Create hierarchy: Your name, titles, and key info should stand out clearly.
Keep it simple: If everything is bold, nothing is bold.
Fonts Matter More Than You Think
Times New Roman works… but it doesn’t stand out.
Better options: Arial, Calibri, Roboto, or Georgia.
Keep text 10–12 pt
Stick to one or two fonts max
And yes, no Comic Sans (ever)
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Skill bars: They look fancy but say nothing
Photos (in the U.S.): Can hurt more than help
Overdesigning: Clean beats creative in most industries
Let LinkedIn show personality. Let your resume show clarity.
Use the Top Third Wisely
This is prime real estate.
Your Professional Summary should quickly show:
What you do
What you’re good at
Why you matter
If they stop reading here, they should still be impressed.
For Career Changers
Your resume should reflect where you’re going, not just where you’ve been.
Highlight transferable skills
Adjust titles to reflect relevant work
Minimize outdated, unrelated experience
If you’re unsure how to position your pivot, our Signature Resume Services can help you tell that story strategically.
Final Polish Checklist
1–2 pages (not a memoir)
Clean alignment (use tabs, not spaces)
Always send as a PDF
You Don’t Have to Figure This Out Alone
Writing your own resume is tough. It’s hard to see your experience objectively, and small mistakes can cost big opportunities.
The goal isn’t to be fancy, it’s to get interviews.
If you’re tired of second-guessing your resume, we’ve got you. From resume writing to LinkedIn optimization, we help you show up as the expert you already are.
